Sol Bamba told not to be stupid before Leeds United match

Cardiff City head coach Neil Warnock has said to BBC Sport that he told Sol Bamba not to be stupid in their match against Leeds United.

The Bluebirds were able to pull off a great result when they faced Leeds, a game Warnock was keen to win as it was a match against one of his many former teams. Despite the West Yorkshire club chasing promotion, Cardiff were able to get a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Sean Morrison and Kenneth Zohore.

And the men who got a lot of the praise in the post-match press conference was his defenders Morrison and Bamba. Before the game, many labelled Bamba as a potential weakness due to his performances while playing for Leeds last season, with former Whites boss Terry Yorath even saying he was hoping he would reproduce one of his mistakes that became trademarked at Elland Road.

But Warnock had a talk with him before the game, keen to tell him to keep the game simple and not try anything stupid that could cost them the game.

He said: “Even the save at the end kept a clean sheet, which I wanted,”

“But the two centre halves I thought were outstanding, Morrison and Bamba.

“I said to those two, especially Sol, you don’t have to prove anything, just be a centre half today.

“Don’t start dribbling and doing stupid things, well the Leeds fans expect him to and I thought he played a typical centre-half role.

“The full-backs were good. Greg [Halford] did his job I think on [Pablo] Hernandez.”
