Nottingham Forest defender in line for international duty recall

Speaking to Goal.com, United States National Team coach Bruce Arena says that Nottingham Forest defender Eric Lichaj is in contention for a call-up for their World Cup qualifiers in March. Arena is in charge of the national side for the second time following his appointment in November 2016.

Arena called up a group of players for a mid-season training camp, where they drew 0-0 with Serbia and defeated Jamaica 1-0. European-based players, such as Lichaj, were not under consideration for that game, but he is still in the running to earn a recall in a few months time.

Under previous coach Jurgen Klinsmann, 28-year-old Lichaj barely featured but is now said to hold a strong chance of returning once again. He currently has 11 caps for the USMNT, and was last called into the squad in May 2016, appearing in a friendly clash against Puerto Rico. Nevertheless, along with Club Tijuana winger Paul Arriola, Arena states that Lichaj has a role to play,

“I think in particular Lichaj and Arriola are players that we have to strongly consider for the March camp.

“We’re going to get to see those players play in the next couple of weeks to help make some of those decisions.”

Deandre Yedlin, who plays for Nottingham Forest’s Championship rivals Newcastle United, is another player who holds claims of slotting into the right back spot for the national team. Lichaj has made 32 appearances for Forest this season so far, either at right or left full back, or in a wing back position as well.
