January Bristol City signing reveals differences between English and German football

Speaking to the Bristol Post, Bristol City January signing Jens Hegeler has been speaking of the differences between English and German football. Prior to moving to Ashton Gate, the versatile performer played his football in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin.

Hegeler, aged 29, concedes that he endured a bit of a culture shock during his early weeks at the club but is now getting up to speed with the expectations of your typical Sky Bet Championship match. However he conceded they are big differences between how both countries want the game to be played.

The central midfielder, who can also play in defence, states that the German game is much more tactical, whilst the pace of the English game is very intense, and the expectations of the crowd reflect that,

There is a big difference between English and German football. The biggest difference is the pace and I think that is a cultural thing.
“In Germany, we think more tactically and look to slow the game down and keep the ball for longer. In England and in the Championship in particular, the crowd want you to get the ball forward a lot more quickly.
“Even when we were winning against Rotherham and I thought the right thing to do was to keep the ball and slow things down, the crowd still expected us to attack. I don’t think that is always right, but I’m learning that it is the way football is played here.”
Hegeler also eluded to the fact that in Germany they rarely play three times in a week, whilst it has certainly become the norm in English football, especially in the English Football League, for as long as most can remember.
“You hardly ever play games in a week in Germany and you have more time to train and prepare between matches. That does not happen here, where it is all about recovery and how much energy you have left for the next match.”
