Birmingham City acadamy graduate linked with big money Liverpool move

According to the Daily Mail, Leicester City winger Demarai Gray, who progressed through the academy at Sky Bet Championship side Birmingham City, in a summer transfer target for Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp wants to add more wingers to his squad for next season.

20-year-old Gray scored a fine solo goal in midweek in an Emirates FA Cup replay as the Foxes knocked Championship side Derby County out of the competition. Gray has made 28 appearances for the club this season, who have struggled to retain their Premier League title. Nevertheless, Liverpool are clearly impressed with what they have seen from the England Under-21 international.

Julian Brandt of Bayer Leverkusen is said to be another target for the Anfield club, who themselves have dropped away from title winners elect Chelsea in the race for top spot.

Gray perfectly fits the DNA that a club such as Liverpool look for in possible signings. They will keen an eye on his progress under Claudio Ranieri for the remainder of the season, with the view to possibly lining up a bid in the summer, where they hope to be able to offer Champions League football as an incentive.

Gray made over 70 appearances in the Birmingham first-team after being handed his opportunity under then-manager Lee Clark against Millwall in 2013. He would have an even bigger contribution during the tenure of Gary Rowett, which ultimately led to Ranieri meeting the price of his release clause in his St Andrews contract in January 2016. The video below gives an insight at the type of skills and tricks he was showcasing during his final season as a Birmingham City player.
