Chester defender angry at being denied move to Barnsley

Chester’s Sam Hughes has told the Chester Standard that he is angry that he was denied a move to Barnsley during the January transfer window.

The 19-year-old defender has been very impressive for the National League side this season and due to that and his young age suggesting there’s a lot of potential there, plenty of teams from the EFL became interested. Aston Villa and Wolves were rumoured to be interested in Hughes but the one team that actually did make a move to sign him was Barnsley.

The Tykes were said to have made a substantial offer for the defender as they looked to rebuild their own squad after seeing many of their top players depart during the transfer window. But chief executive Mark Maguire rejected that deal as they didn’t think it represented value for money and believed they could get more money out of Barnsley at a potential tribunal should they look to sign him on a pre-contract deal.

But Hughes was left frustrated that he wasn’t allowed to make a move to the big leagues, though he does reassure fans that his full focus is on improving Chester’s league position.

He said: “These things happen in football. I was aware there were a couple of clubs looking at me and then Barnsley made a bid, but at the end of the day it wasn’t meant to be,”

“It didn’t happen for whatever reasons and I’ve got to get my head down now and focus on playing here.”

“It’s frustrating at the same time because everyone wants to achieve the most they can and play as high as they can. That’s not just in football it’s in anything they do. But as I touched on before, it wasn’t meant to be, it didn’t happen.”

“That frustration has to be put to one side now, it’s happened. I’ve got to kick on and get back in the team.”

“My only focus now is to get back into this team, that window has gone now, the transfer window has shut and what is meant to be, is meant to be. I hold nothing against anyone, they’ve done what’s best for the club and it’s now time for me to get back into the team and get back to where I was before the injury.”
