Lucas Joao will return to Sheffield Wednesday a better player

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal has told the Sheffield Star via the Telegraph that Lucas Joao will return to the club as a better player after his loan spell ends.

The Owls made a point to sign a new strikers during the January transfer window and were able to bring in Sam Winnall from Barnsley and Jordan Rhodes from Middlesbrough which should improve the amount of goals they are able to score. However that pushed some of the strikers already at the club, including Joao down the pecking order and meant they were less likely to get first team football.

With the club’s management not wanting Joao to stew on the bench or play for the U23s for the rest of the season, they elected to loan him out and he is now at Wednesday’s Sky Bet Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers for the rest of the season. And Carvalhal sees this as a way for the Portuguese forward to improve himself and try to break into the first team next season.

He said: “Lucas is a player who we have a lot of confidence in.”

“It is not easy to play at our club with the attackers that we have.”

“I consider it better for Lucas to play regularly. He has quality but he needs to play.”

“He has more chance to play at Blackburn. He’s a player that I’m sure will do well and score goals.”

“Lucas will probably come back to Sheffield Wednesday in four or five months more ready to play at our club.”
