Phillips, Leeds United: red mist for first team midfielder in U23 game

Leeds United: red mist for first team midfielder in U23 game

Young midfielder and Academy product Kalvin Phillips has not seen much worthwhile first team action of late, with Leeds United preferring to play other options in the midfield engine room.

Phillips’ last appearance for the Whites, for whom he has scored once this season with a glorious free-kick vs. Nottingham Forest in a 3-1 defeat, last made an appearance seven games ago in the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

Today he turned out for the U23 Development side against their Sheffield United counterparts in a game where the Blades came away 4-3 winners from Thorp Arch.

Not that Kalvin Phillips got to play a full part in the game, receiving a red card in first-half time added-on.

Phillips’ red card, earned after a second yellow, is his second sending off of the season after his red card for the first team in the 2-0 loss against promotion-chasing Brighton. At the point of his sending off, Leeds’ U23 side were 2-1 up thanks to goals from tom Pearce and Eoghan Stokes.

That was as good as it got for the Whites, as a 10-man United outfit, that also included first team striker Marcus Antonsson, went down 4-3 – Antonsson scoring Leeds’ third of the day.

Phillips’ dismissal in today’s Development Squad game does not mean that he will serve a game’s suspension and he will be available for consideration for Leeds’ home game on Saturday against Cardiff. This is a game that the Whites will be looking to as a ‘statement’ game and one where they’ll be wanting to bounce back from the last-minute 2-1 defeat against neighbours Huddersfield Town.
