Coventry City take ex Premier League striker on trial

Yakubu may be reigniting his career at Coventry City as the Sky Bet League have agreed to take the former Everton, Leicester and Portsmouth striker on trial as of Monday morning.

The 34-year-old will be looking to recapture his love for the game after his release from Turkish Süper Lig side Kayserispor in June where he didn’t score once in 12 appearances. He did however manage a goal for his previous club Reading back in early 2015 in the Royals 2-1 victory over Derby County to send them into the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup.

The Nigerian international has had a total of over £20 million spent on him throughout his career, first with the £8 million that Middlesbrough spent on him from his transfer to Riverside from Portsmouth. His 28 goals in 2 years for Pompey make him their top Premier League goalscorer ever. Secondly his transfer to Everton cost the Toffees £12.5 million and making the Yak their record signing.

Possibly one of his lowest career points came in the 2010 World Cup for Nigeria when he was gifted a chance from 6 yards out but he spooned it wide. It was dubbed by Alan Shearer as the worst miss he’d ever seen, and when that’s coming from the all time leading Premier League goalscorer it has to be bad.

He will need to produce something monumental to try and save Coventry City from relegation, even though he is a proven goalscorer with some good experience, that is a ridiculous task to have. The Sky Blues fans shouldn’t put all of their hopes on Aiyegbeni because even Cristiano Ronaldo would have trouble trying to keep that club up.
