Brighton and Hove Albion have joined Leeds United in the chase to sign IFK Norrkoping’s Linus Wahlqvist according to a report from Fotboll Direkt.
The 20-year-old defender is seen as a very talented player and someone who will soon outgrow the club and league that he currently plays in. This has led to a number of teams being interested in him as they aim to be the team that Wahlqvist fulfills his true potential at.
Initially, reports suggested that it would be Leeds United who would be signing him. They already have one Swedish international who’s a fan favourite in Pontus Jansson and they are hoping that they can get another with Wahlqvist. But as well as serious competition from abroad with Napoli and Valencia being interested in the defender, they will now have to compete with one of their Sky Bet Championship rivals as Brighton are also in the chase to sign him.
Even though the Seagulls are looking like a good bet to get promoted to the Premier League this season as they are currently 2nd in the Championship, five points above 3rd place Reading, they are looking at players who will be useful no matter what league they find themselves in next year. With Wahlqvist still being very young and having a lot of potential, Brighton believe that even if they are promoted he will still be able to compete at a high enough level to be useful to them. But to do that, Brighton will have to beat many other reputable teams to his signature.
