Bristol City could sell striker to Sky Bet Championship relegation rivals

The Bristol Post is reporting that Bristol City striker Aaron Wilbraham is a deadline day transfer target for fellow Sky Bet Championship strugglers Wigan Athletic. The 37-year-old has family in the North West, and may want to end his career in this part of the UK.

With his current team involved in a relegation battle, Wilbraham would essentially be swapping that for another in the form of a move to the Latics, who are managed by Warren Joyce. All of the focus for Wigan is now on Sky Bet Championship survival after defeat to Manchester United in the Emirates FA Cup on Sunday put an end to their unlikely quest to win that trophy for the second time.

Star man Yanic Wildschut has handed in a transfer request at the DW Stadium in a bid to force through a move away before tonight’s 11pm deadline. Derby County are the club said to be leading that respective race.

In the case of Wilbraham, he has slipped down the pecking order in terms of the strikers available to under pressure head coach Lee Johnson. The January signing of Milan Djuric means that the former Crystal Palace and MK Dons forward is not necessarily a player in demand at Ashton Gate as much as he was before.

City are hoping to snap up Matty Taylor from city rivals Rovers today as well, in a move which would send shockwaves around the streets of Bristol. If that were to go through, the need to keep Wilbraham would be reduced even more. Wigan are not blessed with too many strikers at this present, and Joyce may feel as though his experience will be crucial in their survival prospects.
