Villa: Deal for Rhodes in disarray as Boro boss stays quiet

Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka kept his lips tightly sealed when he was asked about Jordan Rhodes in a press conference today.

Aston Villa have been heavily linked to a move for the prolific striker, but the former Spanish international refused to give anything anyway when he was questioned about the Championship side’s hunt for the front-man.“I don’t know. And I don’t want to know.

“I don’t know. And I don’t want to know.” he said. “The club knew my thoughts one month and a half to go.”

The 27-year-old progressed quickly through the development ranks at Ipswich Town after proving his ability to score for the youth and reserve teams. A few loan spells from Portman Road proved unsuccessful but a temporary move to Brentford saw an 18-year-old Rhodes become the youngest Bee to score a hat-trick – with the striker netting three times in 29 minutes at Shrewsbury in January 2009.

He continued his free-scoring form after moving to Huddersfield in 2009 and scored six goals in his first six games, including one on his debut for the Terriers.

Rhodes – who was born in England – qualified for Scottish nationality and made his debut in November 2011.

A move to Blackburn in August 2012 allowed the prolific talisman to continue his scoring antics and he proved his £8m worth as he netted 28 goals in his first season.

Rhodes made a transfer deadline day switch to Boro in January 2016 and scored six league goals as he helped them to promotion to the Premier League.

He has since fallen out-of-touch at the Riverside and has only made six appearances for the top-flight side, with Boro looking to off-load the striker on either a permanent or loan deal.
