Sheffield United loanee showing his worth at Mansfield Town

Mansfield Town midfielder Ben Whiteman has been attracting a number of admirers during his loan spell in League Two and scored another goal in yesterday’s 2-0 win over Leyton Orient.

The 20-year-old signed for the Stags at the beginning of the month for the remainder of the season and has started every league game since arriving at Field Mill.

Whiteman made his professional debut for the Blades in 2014 under Nigel Clough and has managed to accumulate a further 11 appearances for the League One club. This term, the midfielder was primarily a fringe player under Chris Wilder as he made five appearances during the first-half of the season and moved to Steve Evans’ side to gain some much needed first-team experience.

The youngster has showcased his ability during his time with the Nottingamshire club, bagging two goals in his five starts. Following Mansfield’s 2-0 victory over Leyton Orient, fitness coach Lee Taylor was full of praise for the former Manchester United academy prospect:

“Ben Whiteman was different class, he pops up and how cool was that strike? He’s just took it in his stride and he’s becoming a man.

“From playing League One football at Sheffield United and coming through now and playing in the senior squad here, he’s getting fitter, he’s getting stronger and it’s only testament to obviously what the gaffer, Paul Raynor and myself are delivering for the football club.

“Ben Whiteman is becoming a man now. He’s been excellent, he’s excelled in training, he wants to do everything right and he delivers. He comes in to the analysts after the game and he’s looking for stats, he’s looking for anything to make him better.

“He’s come here and we’ve took him to that next level and we’ll continue to take him to that next level. He’s a big part of the gaffer and he’s a big part of Mansfield Town Football Club at the moment and long may it continue.”

Whiteman has been a driving force as Mansfield climbed to 10th in the League Two table and is yet to lose a game with his loan club. The winning form from his time under Chris Wilder has continued to show at Mansfield and Whiteman is impressing.

Mansfield Town face a trip to Barnet next weekend.
