Aston Villa complete move for Icelandic international playmaker

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Birkir Bjarnason from Swiss Super League side FC Basel, according to the Daily Star.

The transfer is set to be confirmed by the club imminently, with the 28-year-old flying in to the country on Wednesday to undergo a medical.

Bjarnason will become the second central midfielder to move to Villa Park this month following the £3 million transfer of Henri Lansbury from Nottingham Forest.

Barnsley captain Conor Hourihane is also said to be on the brink of a move to the West Midlands, and the signing of Tykes team-mate James Bree is on course to be finalised after the 19-year-old agreed a three-year deal with the Villains.

Bjarnason, nicknamed ‘Thor’ in his home country, was a key member of Iceland’s Euro 2016 squad that surprised the footballing world by reaching the tournament’s quarter finals; infamously knocking out England in the process.

He achieved the honour of scoring the country’s first ever goal in a major tournament when he netted the equaliser in their Group F opener against eventual champions Portugal.

The 28-year-old has made 42 appearances for Basel since joining the Swiss side in 2015, and boasts an impressive goalscoring record from the middle of the park having found the back of the net fourteen times for the club.

During his career the player has also turned out for a number of other established European sides such as Standard Liege and Italian club Sampdoria.

His new side, Aston Villa, take on Brentford away from home in the league on Tuesday evening, as they look to return to winning ways after being held to a draw against Preston North End last time out.
