Newcastle winning the race to sign tricky Premier League winger on loan

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle says that Newcastle United are ‘likely’ to complete the loan signing of Swansea City winger Modou Barrow for the remainder of the season. Head coach Rafa Benitez has been looking to bolster his squad in that position, and the tricky wide man is set to move to St James’ Park.

The Magpies will therefore beat their Sky Bet Championship rivals Aston Villa to the deal, with Steve Bruce desperately trying to sign the player himself. The 24-year-old former Blackburn Rovers loanee has made 19 first team appearances for the club this season, although the majority of them have been as a substitute.

New Swansea head coach Paul Clement has already strengthened his squad in the winger department with Luciano Narsingh, the Netherlands international, making the move from PSV Eindhoven. With Barrow therefore dropping down the pecking order as a consequence, Newcastle look set to benefit from that very fact.

The Gambia international has no release clause in his contract, meaning a temporary deal is the most likely scenario at this point of the season. However it would appear it is likely that the loan move could become permanent at the end of the season if it suits all parties.

Andros Townsend was the number one target for Newcastle once the transfer window opened this month, with Benitez really keen to bring back the former player to the club he made such a big impression with at the end of last season. However that deal appears to have hit a significant stumbling block, meaning that Newcastle appear to have focused their attentions elsewhere in the form of recruiting Barrow, who has also spent time out on loan with Nottingham Forest.
