Defender backs former manager to return to Nottingham Forest

Speaking to the Nottingham Post, Nottingham Forest central defender Matt Mills says that he’d like Dougie Freedman to return to the club as manager. The two-time European Cup winners are looking for a permanent successor to Philippe Montanier, who was sacked after a bad run of form.

Forest got back to winning ways under caretaker boss Gary Brazil at the weekend with a 1-0 home triumph over fellow strugglers Bristol City, thanks to an improvised strike by the impressive Ben Osborn. 30-year-old Mills says that the club hierarchy can do a lot worse than appoint Freedman, who was sacked from his job at the City Ground in March 2016.

With 19 matches of the Sky Bet Championship campaign remaining, Mills says that the club need someone familiar to surroundings who can settle in instantly. Freedman is not just a former manager, but an ex-player too, and Mills has backed the 42-year-old to return,

“It would be a good decision to bring somebody back who already knows the squad and who is proven at keeping teams up and steadying the ship. You cannot look past somebody like that as a candidate for the job.
“You try to minimise your weaknesses and bring your strengths to the table. Look at Middlesbrough away last season – we did a job on them, because we had a plan and we executed it perfectly, to get a 1-0 win.
“We had the fifth or sixth best defensive record last season. It would not be worst idea in the world to consider Dougie.
“I personally think there is a good chance we would have been in a stronger position now, if Dougie had still been in charge in the summer.”
Forest are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Elland Road to take on Leeds United.
