Birmingham CIty’s Italian attacking midfielder Diego Fabbrini has returned to his home country, having joined Spezia Calcio on a temporary basis until the end of the season, according to the Birmingham Mail.
The player has struggled for game time at St. Andrews’ this season so far, having only made a handful of appearances in a blue shirt since the start of the campaign.
His new side, Spezia, are sat in mid-table in the Italian Serie B, and will be looking to Fabbrini to add some flair to their midfield as they look to mount a promotion push in an attempt to make the jump up to the top flight.
The 26-year-old joined the Blues permanently in 2016 from Watford following a successful loan spell.
After progressing through the youth ranks at Italian outfit Empoli, Fabbrini joined Serie A club Udinese, where he made over 20 appearances and scored once.
His performances caught the eye of then-Championship side Watford, and he was one of seven Udinese players to sign a contract at Vicarage Road in 2013.
However, the player struggled to hold down a first-team place at the Hertfordshire club, and was shipped out on loan a number of times throughout his three-year spell at the club.
He spent time at Siena, Millwall and Middlesbrough on temporary deals, as well as enjoying a fruitful spell at current club Birmingham where he impressed enough to earn a permanent transfer.
The Blues travel to Carrow Road to take on Norwich City on the weekend, as they look to record their first victory of the new year.
