Leeds United: odds shorten on return of former player to Elland Road – favourites

When Leeds fans look back at former players with a sense of longing, one that tends to bring a warm smile to their faces is a mention of Fabian Delph.

Delph came up through the youth system at Elland Road after the Whites had picked him up from Bradford City in 2001. He went on to grow through the impressive Thorp Arch Academy set-up at Elland Road, being promoted to first team reckoning at the start of the 2007/08 season as a 17-year-old.

All-in-all Bradford-born Delph made 58 appearances for Leeds United, scoring six times and making one assist before a big money, £8 million transfer to then-Premier League side Aston Villa. After 134 appearances, eight goals and eight assists, Delph moved on from the Villans to big boys Manchester City in mid-July 2015 for a fee of nearly £10 million.

In his 18-month stay at the Etihad, Delph has made just 31 appearances for the Mancunians, scoring just the three goals. This season he has made just two appearances in the Premier League totalling just 28 minutes.

There have been rumours going around social media that the homegrown Delph was seemingly a target for Leeds United, but rumours are a common thing at this time of year, in what is now the last opportunity for English teams to bring new players on board.

Leading bookmakers Ladbrokes have slashed the odds on third-placed Leeds to bring their former midfielder back to the fold. At present the Whites are 4/1 favourites as the destination of Delph’s next permanent club, with Delph’s other former side Aston Villa just behind at odds of 6/1.

Leeds United play Barnsley on Saturday in a West vs South Yorkshire derby match where three points for the Whites would keep them hot on the trail of automatic promotion.
