Aston Villa plot move for Burnley striker after Jordan Rhodes deal falls through

Aston Villa are plotting a move to sign Burnley’s Ashley Barnes after their deal to sign Jordan Rhodes fell through according to a report from The Independent.

After Rudy Gestede was sold to Middlesbrough earlier in the transfer window, Villa were aiming to sign a new striker as a replacement. To begin with, they were looking to sign Middlesbrough’s Jordan Rhodes for a £10m fee as he had never really adjusted to the move to Teesside and the club seems willing to sell him. However in a press conference earlier today, their head coach Steve Bruce said it is unlikely that they will be signing Rhodes.

That means that if they want to sign a Gestede replacement, they will have to look elsewhere and the player they have now moved onto is Burnley’s Ashley Barnes. The 27-year-old striker has struggled to get first team action since the Clarets were promoted to the Premier League having only made six starts.

This means that Burnley are willing to sell up should Aston Villa stump up the £5m fee that the Lancashire side are wanting for him. While he is contracted to stay at Turf Moor until 2019, Barnes does seem willing to drop down a league if he can get back to playing regular first team football. And with Villa losing Rudy Gestede to Middlesbrough and Jonathan Kodjia also away from the squad as he competes for the Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations, signing a striker like Barnes could be the ideal addition.
