NEWS: ‘Forest should approach former derby boss’

Nottingham Forest should look to former Derby and current Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough to replace Philippe Montanier.

Tha’s the view of former Nottingham Forest star, Gary Birtles. (As reported in the Derby Telegraph.)

The Red’s who parted company with Montanier on Saturday evening, have already found themselves linked with a number of potential managers.

The news of Montaniers sacking, which came after a 0-0 draw at Birmingham City, came just 24 hours after the failed takeover negotiations, had broken.

The man Birtles is now tipping to succeed Montanier, spent four and half years as the manager of their fierce rivals, Derby County.

A spell at Sheffield United followed before he returned to Burton.  The club he started his managerial career at. His return to the Pirelli Stadium came last season when outgoing manager Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink left to take the vacancy at QPR.  From there, Clough oversaw the club’s promotion to The Championship – the first time the club had played at that level in its history.

Should he be the man to take the Forest job at this moment in time? Gary Birtles has had his say on the matter.

He said:

“He’s encountered difficult situations before, and there’s no more difficult situation than the state Forest are in at the moment.

“He unites people. He would unite the club – it’s not just individuals, it’s a football club.

“That’s what needs to happen – the club needs uniting; the whole thing needs uniting. He could help bring stability.

“I just can’t believe he’s been overlooked every time a manager has been appointed.”
