Leeds United starlet snubbed by two Premier League sides

There is no doubting that youngster Ronaldo Vieira is making a dream start to his career at Elland Road. However, according to an article in The Express, it could have all been different.

18-year-old Vieira is a huge prospect making 22 appearances so far this season. In his last appearance, against Derby County at Elland Road, the teenager ran the show in midfield. All this from a player who only made his debut in last season’s final game against Preston North End, just after signing his first pro deal at Elland Road.

His rise to first team starter at Leeds has been meteoric, but it all might not have been according to his old coach who has revealed the player nearly did not sign on at Elland Road. Instead, the Express report he was subject of interest from Premier League giants Manchester City a club where his coach Steve Collins worked at the time.

Collins has revealed Vieira had a trial at Manchester City and simply told the Yorkshire Evening Post (YEP), “It (the City trial) didn’t work out.” Collins invited the then Under-13 player to train with his Under-15 side, alongside twin brother Romario saying that the “two of them were fantastic.”

Collins also claimed in the YEP article that Hull City were interested but that the Tigers’ interest waned as the East Yorkshire side were unwilling to cover his travel expenses. Speaking to the YEP, Collins said: “With Hull it was more down to the fact that they weren’t willing to pay for his travel. I think they were keen but it wasn’t really possible for him to get there without some help.”

What was Manchester City and Hull’s loss at the time has definitely been Leeds United’s gain. Ronaldo Vieira is putting on the kind of displays that are demonstrating how he is rapidly growing into possibly the next big thing at Elland Road.
