Sheffield Wednesday set to complete signing of 11-goal striker

Sheffield Wednesday are set to complete the signing of Barnsley striker Sam Winnall, according to the Mirror.

The 25-year-old had a medical at the club yesterday ahead of agreeing a switch to Barnsley’s local and league rivals.

Winnall has enjoyed a good first-half of the Sky Bet Championship season, scoring 11 goals in 22 league appearances.

The 25-year-old was pivotal in Barnsley’s promotion from League One during the 2015/16 campaign, scoring 21 goals and assisting a further seven.

Winnall was a target for Brentford, who are set to sell Scott Hogan to Premier League outfit West Ham United for a fee of £15 million.

Hogan has scored 14 goals in 25 league appearances this season. Glenn Murray and Dwight Gayle are the only strikers in the second tier to boast a better record so far during this campaign.

Promotion hopefuls Reading had shown previous interest in the forward, having tabled a £9 million bid before the January transfer window opened.

Another Championship side, Newcastle United, have also looked into the possibility of signing Hogan, but were told they must pay £15 million, the figure the Bees valued the striker at before the January window.

Now, Sheffield Wednesday are set to beat competition from Brentford to secure the services of the forward as they look to secure promotion to the Premier League after last season’s loss in the Play-Off Final to Hull City.

Wednesday currently sit in 6th place in the Sky Bet Championship table. The Owls have won 12 of their 25 league games this season, picking up 42 points. They next face Huddersfield Town at Hillsborough.
