Brighton become favourites to sign legend Irish striker

Brighton & Hove Albion are the 5/4 favourites with Sky Bet to be the next club to sign free agent striker Robbie Keane. The 36-year-old Republic of Ireland all-time record goalscorer is looking for a club having left Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy.

It was widely expected that Keane would be signing for Irish club Shamrock Rovers, who had been the long time favourites to snap up the veteran since he left America. However Brighton have now surfaced on the scene as Chris Hughton could be looking for some experienced heads to help the Seagulls over the line and into the promised land of the Premier League.

The last time the Dublin-born forward played his football in the English second tier was back in the late 1990s when he broke onto the football scene with Wolverhampton Wanderers. His goals then earned him a big move to Coventry City, and then an even bigger move to Inter Milan. His time in Italy was brief, before Leeds United came calling for the energetic front man. His loan spell at Elland Road was made permanent before a £7million move to Spurs in 2002 saw him play his best football. After six years, he made a mega-money transfer to Liverpool but only scored seven goals for the club. He would rejoin Tottenham two years later, and had loan spells with Celtic and West Ham before he headed to the MLS in Los Angeles in 2011. He won three MLS Cup’s during his time in USA and had a brief stint at Aston Villa on loan as well.

If the money is to be taken notice of, then he could be heading to the Amex Stadium in the coming weeks. With him being a free agent, he doesn’t necessarily have to sign during this transfer window, but he’ll be keen to find himself a club as soon as possible.
