Aston Villa set for big money battle to sign Fulham midfielder

Aston Villa are set to spend big money to beat Newcastle United to the signing of Fulham’s Tom Cairney according to a report from the Daily Mirror.

Earlier in the week it was made clear that Newcastle were looking to recruit a top quality central midfielder with the Magpies previously being linked with big name moves for the likes of Everton’s Tom Cleverley and Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek. But most recently they were rumoured to be making a move for Cairney, current contracted to Fulham, who has been rated at £10m.

Not many of Newcastle’s rivals in the Sky Bet Championship would be able to spend that amount of cash on player so it seemed that if the Tyneside club did end up making a push to sign him, they would be on their own as they aimed to complete negotiations. However one of the few teams who can match any bid Newcastle make, Aston Villa, are now also interested in signing Cairney.

Their head coach Steve Bruce is looking to reshape the squad in his image and has been given £25m by the club’s ownership to do so. It appears that they may be close to completing a deal for Henri Lansbury after a report suggested that Nottingham Forest had accepted an offer for him, but they are also looking at other midfielders and Cairney is one of players who has attracted their attention. While he is valued at a lot of money, Bruce knows him well from his time at Hull City, though he did actually sell the midfielder three years ago. But now he is happy to reunite himself with Cairney and hopefully get promotion together.
