League One strugglers sack manager after ten defeats in last 12

Sky Bet League One side Northampton Town have confirmed that they have parted company with manager Rob Page. Chairman Kelvin Thomas has cited that the ‘recent run of results’ was the reason for coming to this decision.

The Cobblers sit 15th in the league table after 26 matches. Out of their last ten league games, eight have resulted in defeats and two victories. In addition to this, they were knocked out of the FA Cup by non-league Stourbridge and lost on penalties to the West Ham Under-23s in the Checkatrade Trophy. This makes it ten losses in their last 12. The 5-0 away defeat to Bristol Rovers on Saturday proved to be the final nail in the coffin for former Welsh international defender Page.

A statement released on the official club website from Thomas states that the club were ‘disappointed’ to have to come to this decision but felt ‘a change is necessary’,

“We are disappointed to make this decision regarding Rob, however following the recent run of results we feel that a change is necessary.
“Rob has always been extremely professional throughout his time and has only ever wanted the club to be successful.  It was always going to be a very tough challenge following last year and the expectation that created, so we thank him for his efforts and we wish him very well for the future.”
Paul Wilkinson takes temporary charge whilst a replacement is sought.
The sacking of Page comes only a few days after he made comments about his teams performance in their heavy defeat at Bristol Rovers. He referred to it as being ‘men against girls’ and subsequently apologised for his comments later on. There will undoubtedly be some reports suggesting that this could have been another reason for Page losing his job, although it would appear results only have been the only real consideration when reaching this climax.
