Charlton loan proven League One midfielder from Wigan

Charlton Athletic have completed the loan signing of Wigan Athletic midfielder Nathan Byrne. The 24-year-old winger makes the move to The Valley on a deal lasting until the end of the season. He has made 14 appearances for Wigan Athletic in the Championship this season so far.

Byrne, who can also play at wing back, possesses plenty of Sky Bet League One experience from his time playing for Swindon Town between 2013 and 2015, where he helped the club reach the Play-Off Final. He becomes Charlton’s fourth signing this month already.

The Addicks have snapped up a player that possesses just under 200 senior appearances of competitive football and manager Karl Robinson expects him to be a big creator of chances during his time with the club,

“I’m very happy to be able to add Nathan to our squad. When he was at Swindon, he was one of the best players in this league. He plays off the right and can also play as a 10. He can be phenomenal going forward, is very quick and will add energy to the squad.

“He’s one of the quickest wingers in the league. He gets to the byline, delivers crosses and we’ve got some really good strikers to capitalise on that.

“He’s an assister. We’ve brought in a top, top player at this level. I’m looking forward to working with him and hope we can get the rewards for his talent. Hopefully he finds a home here where he enjoys playing football.”

Latics manager Warren Joyce believes this is a move which suits all parties and hasn’t ruled out Byrne having a long term future at the DW Stadium either,
“Nathan definitely has qualities but we feel at this moment, he would be better served by going out on loan and getting matches under his belt then reassessing the situation in the summer. We wish him all the best at Charlton.”
Byrne is in contention to make his debut for his new club this weekend when Millwall travel to Charlton for an all-London derby.
