Derby striker Bent says Rams can compete in top flight

Derby County forward Darren Bent has said that yesterday’s FA Cup third round victory over West Bromwich Albion proves that his side can cut it in the Premier League.

The Rams progressed to the fourth round of the tournament at the expense of Premier League West Brom, with a goal from Bent and an exquisite free kick from winger Tom Ince grabbing the victory for Steve McClaren’s side.

And the experienced striker believes that the win suggests Derby would not look out of place in English football’s top flight.

“It’s a fantastic result. I thought we played really well in the first half, but we showed that we could compete with a Premier League side.

“When you are playing these Premier League sides you have to show them respect and we had to be cautious because they have some quality players.”

Reflecting on yesterday’s match, Bent believes that the Rams deserved the victory, despite his side being pegged back before the break with a goal from West Brom winger Matt Phillips.

“We were disappointed to go in [at half time] a goal down. In the second half, we didn’t have anything to lose and we went out to have a right go. When you look at the chances that we created compared to them, I think we deserved it.”

Derby are also enjoying a prosperous Championship campaign so far; having been slow to move out of the blocks at the beginning of the season, a change in manager has sparked an upturn in form and they are now firmly embroiled in the battle for promotion.

They currently sit in seventh place, just two points behind Sheffield Wednesday in sixth position.

They travel to Elland Road on Friday night to take on fellow promotion-chasers Leeds United, as they look to get back to winning ways following the break from league action.
