West Brom join race for Barnsley centre back

Premier League side West Bromwich Albion have joined the race to sign Barnsley’s £6million-rated defender Marc Roberts who is also a target for Burnley, according to the Daily Mail.

The Daily Mail this morning have reported that Premier League outfit West Bromwich Albion have joined the race for Barnsley centre back Marc Roberts.

The 26-year-old is also being chased by fellow Premier League side Burnley. Barnsley value their man at around £6million.

26-year-old Roberts has become a key member of Paul Heckingbottom’s side and is a regular starter in the heart of their defence. He too has played a major role in their strong start to life back in the English second tier, making 22 appearances so far this season for the Tykes.

Both Premier League sides have obstacles to overcome in their pursuit of the defender. Roberts still has a decent amount of time remaining on his Oakwell deal, meaning they’d have to part way with a fairly significant fee. Burnley are said to be lining up a £2million offer to test the resolve of the Yorkshire club who will understandably be keen to keep the player. The Yorkshire club are said to believe that their man is worth more in the £6million range.

However Roberts could be swayed by a move into the Premier League for the first time in his career with Barnsley seemingly still a way off a step up to the top flight of English football.

Barnsley are bracing themselves for bids for Marc Roberts during the January transfer window.
