Cardiff City complete move for Rotherham United defender

Cardiff City have completed the signing of Greg Halford from Rotherham United for an undisclosed fee as confirmed by the club website.

The 32-year-old defender initially joined the Millers in the summer of 2015 and would soon become a key part of their defence, though he did have to suffer through a number of different managers at the club before they managed to stay in the Sky Bet Championship.

But with Cardiff’s recently appointed head coach Neil Warnock knowing Halford well from his short but successful reign at the New York Stadium last season, he thought that the veteran would be the ideal signing to his team as he looks to strengthen the squad ahead of a battle to stay in the Championship. He has signed a one-and-a-half year contract which will keep him at the Cardiff City Stadium until 2018.

While Halford has primarily been used as a right back during his career, one of his best assets is his versatility. He not only can play across the defence, something which Rotherham have used to great effect since he signed for them, but has also been known to play in midfield and even up front on some occasions. With temporary loans being banned this season, this versatility could be very important should injuries start to pile up for Cardiff.

But it is his experience which could provide most useful. Having played for the likes of Portsmouth, Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest, Halford has big game experience and will have to use that for Cardiff this season as they look to fight against the drop.
