Birmingham agree £2million fee for signing of La Liga international midfielder

Birmingham City manager Gianfranco Zola confirms that the club are interested in signing Granada midfielder Rene Krhin. The Daily Mail understands that the Championship club have agreed a £2million fee to bring the Slovenian international to St Andrews in the coming days.

Although the Italian conceded that the deal has not yet been completed, it would appear to be practically a formality at this stage. The 26-year-old certainly has excellent pedigree based on the fact he used to be on the books at Serie A giants Inter Milan, although he didn’t make too many appearances for the San Siro club.

He has found himself on the fringes of the Granada squad this season, playing just five times for the Spanish top flight strugglers. Also, he has an additional five caps for the Slovenia national team, including in the 0-0 home draw against England in October 2016, taking his international cap tally to 30.

It was under Jose Mourinho where Krhin played his football at Inter, but now looks set to play under Chelsea legend Zola, who is still seeking his first win in charge since replacing Gary Rowett at the helm.

The player was spotted at Birmingham Airport earlier today ahead of contractual discussions with the Blues and Zola. Krhin, who netted for Slovenia in their 2-2 draw in Lithuania in September, is a central midfielder and would therefore challenge with the likes of Maiel Kieftenbeld, Robert Tesche, Stephen Gleeson, David Davis and Diego Fabbrini for a place in the starting eleven.
