Gillingham announce new management trio

Sky Bet League One side Gillingham have announced Adrian Pennock, Steve Lovell and Jamie Day as their new management team.

The Gills sacked Manager Justin Edinburgh yesterday, but the League One side have taken less than 24 hours to find and sign his replacement.

The Kent side currently sit 17th in the League, eight points safe from relegation but ten points behind the play-off places.

After finishing ninth last season, Edinburgh continued his role but after 25 games in the current campaign, the English third-tier side opted to remove him from his position following back-to-back defeats to Milwall, on Friday, and Oxford on Monday.

The Priestfield Stadium side took less than 24 hours to decide that a move for former defender Pennock would be a successful choice. However, with the 45-year-old’s past experience only being in non-league, many people are looking forward to see how the former Norwich defender will fare in the Football League.

Alongside Pennock in the dugouts will be Steve Lovell and Jamie Day.

Lovell has no experience in coaching or management, with his previous role in football coming as a player for Bournemouth. The half-brother of current Cherries boss Eddie Howe retired in September 2011 after sustaining an injury that meant he was no longer able to continue playing.

37-year-old Day joins the Gills with potentially more experience than Pennock. The former Bournemouth, Dover Athletic and Welling United midfielder counts five clubs as his past employers, including Welling United – where he had two spells – as well as Forest Green Rovers and Braintree Town.

Gillingham Chairman Paul Scally said he was delighted to be able to capture the trio as his new management team: “I am convinced they will enhance the performances of the first-team squad going forward,” he said.

“The current squad is the most expensive in the history of Gillingham Football Club, it has enormous potential and is capable of achieving great success over the remainder of the season and beyond.

“I fully appreciate this has been a difficult few days for supporters. However, based on the playing performance over the previous calendar year, that of 14 wins out of 48 league games, and only eight victories from 25 matches this season, I felt a change was necessary to ensure that the club achieves the best possible position it can after the final 21 fixtures of this campaign.”

The trio will meet their new squad on Friday when they lead their training session for the first time after being unveiled to the press.
