Brentford to launch bid for Wigan midfielder

Championship side Brentford are set to offer league rivals Wigan Athletic £850,000 in exchange for young midfielder Max Power, according to reports from The Sun.

Power, formerly of Tranmere Rovers, has notched up five assists in 24 league appearances for the Latics so far this season, and is a target for Bees boss Dean Smith as he looks to add to his ranks for the second half of the Championship campaign.

The 23-year-old had previously been linked with Premier League side Crystal Palace alongside Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon, but it seems as if Brentford will be the club to make a move for his services in this window.

Power’s current club have struggled as of late; the Latics currently sit in 23rd place in the table, and it is debatable whether or not they would be willing to let any of their better players move on in this transfer window.

The Birkenhead-born playmaker began his career at National League side Tranmere Rovers, and after progressing through the youth ranks at Prenton Park made a name for himself with a series of eye-catching performances in the middle of the park.

He made the switch to Wigan when Rovers were relegated from League Two in 2015, and he continued his good form there, helping the team to an instant return to the second tier following their relegation the previous campaign.

In August, Power put pen to paper to sign a contract extension that is scheduled to keep him at the DW Stadium until 2019, but if Brentford can tempt the Latics to sell up, he may be moving on to pastures new before the end of this month.

The Bees take on non-league Eastleigh in the Emirates FA Cup third round this weekend, whilst Wigan play host to fellow Championship side Nottingham Forest.
