Aston Villa boss looking to bring in QPR shot stopper

Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce is stepping up his interest in Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Alex Smithies, according to The Mirror.

Bruce has made the signing of a new number one goalkeeper one of his top priorities during January’s transfer window and is looking towards London club QPR to get his man.

Steve Bruce recently dropped Villa’s Italian goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini for their win away at Loftus Road with Mark Bunn replacing Gollini who had started the season as No.1 keeper at Villa Park.

After that Mark Bunn has now started the last four league games for Aston Villa however Bruce is determined to add to his goalkeeping options and Smithies figures highly on his wanted list despite QPR’s reluctance to let him go this January.

Former Huddersfield shot stopper Smithies impressed Bruce during Villa’s 1-0 win at Loftus Road in December, making a number of key saves including a penalty from summer signing Jonathan Kodjia. Steve Bruce was also at Molineux last weekend to watch Alex Smithies during QPR’s 2-1 win over Wolves.

Former England Under-21 international Alex Smithies has been QPR’s stand-out performer so far this season to an extent despite their struggles at the wrong end of the Championship table.

The goalkeeper has been an ever-present in the Championship this season and has established himself as a key man at Loftus Road. Therefore QPR would be reluctant to lose Smithies this month and are unlikely to want to offer their man out to a fellow Championship side.

Steve Bruce is set to test the Londoners resolve to keep hold of the 26-year-old ‘keeper though as he looks to solve his current goalkeeping problem at Villa Park.
