The list of Championship players at the African Cup of Nations

A total of 13 Sky Bet Championship players have left their respective clubs for now to depart to the African Cup of Nations. The tournament is hosting by Gabon, starting on January 14th, with the final taking place on February 5th. Some clubs risk losing their players for the best part of a month during a crucial stage of the season.

Of the 24 clubs in the English second tier, eight of those have players representing their national sides having played their final matches over the weekend. None will take part in their respective FA Cup Third Round ties in the coming days, and managers will be hoping some return sooner rather than later.

Clubs near the top of the table such as Brighton & Hove Albion, Leeds United, Huddersfield Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County are fortunate, as no player in their squads have been called up. Unfortunately the likes of Newcastle United have been hit particularly hard.

Newcastle United and Rafa Benitez are hit the hardest as FOUR of their players have headed off to Africa. Mohamed Diame and Christian Atsu of Senegal and Ghana respectively are the two standout names unavailable to the Spaniard for now. Achraf Lazaar and Chancel Mbemba have barely featured for the club in recent times and they too head away with their national teams.

Aston Villa are another club to be hit particularly hard as although they only lose two, both are important players. Jonathan Kodjia is practically the first name on Steve Bruce’s teamsheet, and he was certainly missed in their 1-0 defeat to Cardiff City, where Ivory Coast did not give him permission to feature. Jordan Ayew of Ghana played, but he too departs for the next month or so. Ghana are managed by former Chelsea manager Avram Grant.

Fulham have enjoyed a productive season so far but they lose two attacking members of their squad because of AFCON. The most notable of those is forward Floyd Ayite, who now links up with Cameroon. Since signing from Bastia, he has become a key member of Slavisa Jokanovic’s squad, even more so now Chris Martin seemingly wants to severe all ties with the Craven Cottage club. Fringe players Neeskens Kebano is another to temporarily leave.

Five more Championship clubs have one sole representative of their squads missing for the time being. Barnsley will have to make do without full back Andy Yiadom, whilst Jacques Maghoma of Birmingham City leaves Gianfranco Zola one player lightly in the winger department. Cardiff City lose Bruno Manga, although there is every chance he could be leaving in January anyway because of his high wages. Norwich City lose Youssouf Mulumbu to DR Conga, whilst Wolves’ Romain Saiss reports for Morocco.
