Latics show interest in Terriers midfielder

Wigan Athletic are considering making a move for Huddersfield Town midfielder Dean Whitehead during this month’s transfer window according to the Huddersfield Examiner.

The experienced 34-year old Abingdon born midfielder has found himself used sporadically by his club throughout the first half of the season and could be tempted by the offer of more regular first team football away from The John Smith’s Stadium.

It has now been reported that Wigan Athletic would like to sign the player either on a loan deal until the end of the season or on a permanent basis. The newly promoted Latics are battling an immediate relegation back to Sky Bet League One with the Lancashire club currently five points adrift of safety.

In Whitehead, Wigan Athletic would be acquiring a vastly experienced campaigner. The veteran midfielder has made over 600 career appearances, the majority of which have been made in the top two tiers of English football.

The player started his career with Oxford United before enjoying spells with Sunderland, Stoke City and Middlesbrough. Whitehead signed for Huddersfield Town on a free transfer in summer 2015 after leaving Boro but despite making 36 appearances in his first season with The Terriers, first team opportunities have become much less regular for the player this term.
