Manchester United stopper extends Grimsby loan stay

England under-20 international goalkeeper Dean Henderson has extended his stay at League Two side Grimsby Town from Manchester United until the end of January, reports the club’s official website.

Henderson, who has kept two clean sheets in his opening two Grimsby appearances, will now stay at Blundell Park until the end of January.

The Whitehaven-born player told Peak Elite about his desire to play more for the Mariners after making his debut in the 2-0 win over Accrington Stanley on Boxing Day.

He said: “I may only be young with a lot of time ahead of me but I want to play. That’s what a goalkeeper trains all week for. Now I’ve had my first taste it has me wanting more!”

The news comes a day after Red Devils’ boss Jose Mourinho stated to Talksport that Henderson’s fellow young ‘keeper Sam Johnstone would the only loan player allowed to leave Old Trafford in the New Year.

“Sam Johnstone is the only player that I will allow to go on loan because he doesn’t play one single minute, he needs to play,” Mourinho said.

“We have a young goalkeeper in Joel (Pereira), a goalkeeper that played many minutes in the past six months in the Portuguese Premier League and now it’s time for Sam to play six months.

“That’s the only loan move that we are going to do.”

Henderson will be hoping to keep his place in the Mariners’ starting XI when they travel to Carlisle United on Monday 2 January in a League Two fixture.
