Bristol City attacker joins Cheltenham Town

Diego De Girolamo has joined Cheltenham Town on loan for the rest of the season as confirmed by their club website.

The 21-year-old only joined Bristol City in the summer but has made just one appearance for the Championship outfit, as an extra-time substitute in the EFL Cup.

The forward left Sheffield United in the summer by mutual consent after new boss Chris Wilder placed De Girolamo on the transfer list. The youngster became well-known at the South Yorkshire club prior to his Blades debut due to his huge potential and appearances for Italy at U18, U19 and U20 level. He attracted interest from Premier League clubs such as Manchester United and Manchester City as well as admirers in Serie A.

However, the Chesterfield-born attacker never held a spot in the Blades match day squad and was only included inconsistently each season. He made his debut aged 17 but made just nine further appearances for Sheffield United and spent time on loan at York City and Northampton Town.

City boss Lee Johnson was pleased to send the youngster on loan, “Diego has done extremely well with our Under-23s this season and has had a taste of first-team action.

“This loan gives him the chance to play regular league football and really test himself.”

Cheltenham are currently sat second-bottom of League Two and will be boosted by the arrival of De Girolamo. The Gloucestershire club have just one win in their last nine league games. While the forward has’t been playing much for Bristol City’s first-team, he has been impressing for the U23s and scored a hat-trick in his last game.
