Newcastle enter the 2017 portion on the 2016/17 season rightly on top of the Sky Bet Championship table courtesy of their imperious form and aided by hotshot striker Dwight Gayle’s league-leading 19 goals.
Such is the manner in which they are sweeping teams aside, driven by what is essentially the bones of a Premier League side, that you’d find very few punters who would bet against the Magpies gaining automatic promotion come May time.
However, despite having a side more than equipped for a promotion, it seems that Newcastle are still looking to strengthen the squad according to a report from Mail Online. The Mail Online say that the Toon are looking to add three more to the squad to consolidate their promotion push.
Top of their list is out-of-favour Everton midfielder Tom Cleverley who the Mail Online say Newcastle “have asked about taking” on loan from Merseyside to Tyneside. 27-year-old Cleverley has slipped down the pecking order at Goodison Park, having appeared in only 10 Premier League games this season, accruing just 403 minutes of game time.
The Mail Online also mention two other players who Newcastle are said to be interested in in Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph.
Highly thought of Loftus-Cheek will always struggle to break into a star-studded Chelsea midfield, and it is thought that a drop down to the Championship with promotion-chasing Newcastle will give the youngster that big-game experience that he needs.
Former Leeds United youngster Fabian Delph has found game time hard to come by this season, with only two substitute appearances totalling 28 minutes in the Premier League. With this lack of game time, the Mail Online say in a photograph caption that the 27-year-old “could also drop down to the Championship.”
