Leeds United: summer rumour in winter garb- released Premier player

After spending nearly two decades at Everton, Leon Osman was released by the Toffeemen and found himself a free agent. According to the Mail Online at the time, this wasn’t likely to last for a great deal of time.

Back in the summer, according to the Mail Online, Leeds United head coach Garry Monk was “weighing up a move” for the former Everton midfielder whose total football career has been spent at the Merseyside club.

After 16 years and 426 games for Everton in the Premier League, a spell that saw him score 56 goals and provide 37 assists, Osman finds himself looking for a new club for the first time in his career. The Daily Mail seemed to think that it would be Leeds United and Garry Monk who became his football saviours and bring him to Elland Road.

His final season with the Toffees saw the veteran midfielder only make nine appearances and play 217 minutes of Premier League action, only completing a full 90 minutes once vs Southampton – a game that ended in a 1-1 draw. However, supposed interest from the Whites materialised into nothing and Osman didn’t arrive at Elland Road.

However, the summer rumour has come around again thanks to a line in a Scottish Sun article. Ostensibly talking about Scottish giants Rangers “weighing up a January move” for the veteran midfielder, the article also mentions interest from elswhere for the former Everton man. Alongside Derby County and Bristol City, Leeds United are also said to be “keeping tabs on Osman’s situation,” a situation that finds the 35-year-old as a free agent.

It is that one single phrase that sees the summer rumour suddenly wearing winter clothes as the January transfer window prepares to open. In truth, this comment is likely a throwaway tip o’ the hat to the summer rumours linking Osman to Leeds United. It would be difficult to see just how Osman would fit into Garry Monk’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation given the players already at the club. Club captian Liam Bridcutt and Eunan O’Kane, when fit, are seen as the first choice holding midfielders, whilst Kalvin Phillips and the impressive Ronaldo Vieira are the go-to players as replacements.

Bringing in Osman might lend experience to a youthful squad, but he’d likely be way down the pecking order when it came to actually making any kind of impact.
