Grimsby beat League One opposition to lightning-quick teen striker

League Two side Grimsby Town have beaten off competition from League One sides to sign highly-rated young striker Ahkeem Rose on an 18-month deal, reports the club’s official website.

The 18-year-old had been on trial at Blundell Park, impressing for the Mariners’ youth team with three goals in as many games and the North East Lincolnshire club were quick to secure the player to a professional contract with both Walsall and the Mariners’ former boss Paul Hurst at Shrewsbury waiting in the wings.

The Mariners’ Head of Youth, Neil Woods said: “He’s a very quick striker, scores goals, and he’s got a fantastic work ethic.
“He needs to get better, holding the ball up in tight areas, but he’s something from the 21s downwards that we don’t really have in our system.
“We had him in at Walsall, we had him all pre-season, and we really liked him.
“Unfortunately we had just committed to bringing in three first year strikers.
“So he wasn’t the right fit at the right time at Walsall. Everybody liked him as a person, everybody liked him as a player.
“He’s done very well since he came here, he’s scored three goals in three games, had an hand in another goal.
“He’s giving us a focal point for our attacks, he works very hard off of the ball as well.
“He’s generally a top lad to have around.”
The teen starlet had been on the books of Midland League Division One outfit Heather St. John’s earlier this campaign, impressing with ten goals in 26 appearances for the Saints.
Manager Stephen Rigby spoke of his delight at the Jamaican striker’s big move.

He said: “I’m delighted for Ahkeem, he’s a great lad with a great attitude and work rate.

“He has frightening pace and deserves every chance that comes his way.

“This is a huge opportunity for him and he has to get his head down and continue to work hard but most of all enjoy it!

“I’m delighted to have played a small part in Ahkeem’s development both with him at Heather St. John’s and also during my time at Pelsall Villa.
