REPORT: Leeds United cruise to third successive victory

Sky Bet Championship side Leeds United eased to a third successive victory as Garry Monk’s side defeated Preston North End 1-4 at Deepdale.

Kemar Roofe had put the visitors ahead on 17 minutes as he turned in Pontus Jansson’s goal-bound header.

Hadi Sacko doubled the lead just six minutes later for the Whites.

The hosts had a slight glimpse of hope when Marnick Vermiji pulled one back for the home side from 20-yards.

Any chance of a comeback was ended though when Souleymane Doukara netted a fine solo goal to make it 3-1 on 31 minutes.

Former Leeds terrace hero Jermaine Beckford was given his marching orders in the 69th-minute when he reacted violently to a strong aerial challenge from Kyle Bartley. The dismissal was his second in his past two appearances, having been shown a red card following a fight with team-mate Eoin Doyle.

Substitutes Chris Wood and Pablo Hernandez linked up well to grab a fourth goal on 88 minutes.

After the game Leeds boss Garry Monk was pleased with how his team responded to Vermiji’s goal:

“We managed to get ourselves some good goals, the only disappointment being their goal. That was the only time where I thought we lost concentration.

“It was a good reaction after that, though, to regain the two-goal lead. I thought it was a very good all-round performance against a team that are doing very well lately.”

Whereas PNE boss Simon Grayson highlighted the fact that Beckford’s dismissal cost his side greatly, but also hinted at a sense of disappointment with referee Jeremy Simpson’s performance.

“It was inconsistent from the referee but Jermaine Beckford has to react in a better way than he has done.

“I think he got a nasty knee in the back but you can’t react and that took the wind out of our sails. You don’t need to be going down to 10 men too many times in this division.

“I think sometimes in the heat of the moment we do things we shouldn’t do but you’d like to think the older players can cope with it.”
