Newcastle’s stalwart midfielder wanted in La Liga

Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote is wanted by Spanish outfit Sporting Gijon, according to the Daily Mail.

The Ivory Coast international has been largely out of favour since Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship, making just one appearance against Aston Villa as a substitute. Tiote was formally a key member of the Magpies squad and has made over 150 appearances for Newcastle. His only ever goal for the club was the famous 87th minute equaliser in the stunning 4-4 draw against Arsenal.

Tiote signed a huge six and a half year contract back in 2011, just six months after his £3.5 million arrival from Dutch club FC Twente. The contract runs out at the end of the current season.

The 30-year-old saw failed moves to China and Turkey last summer. The midfielder flew to Istanbul to sign for Galatasaray, only for a breakdown between agents’ representations. Galatasaray claimed he failed a medical.

It now seems a move to Spain may be next, as La Liga side Sporting Gijon have made a £850,000 offer for Cheick Tiote. Gijon narrowly avoided relegation last season, finishing in 17th place and just one point clear of the relegation zone. The Spanish club are once again struggling as they sit in 18th place and have only recorded three league wins.

Tiote has bags of experience. He has won national leagues in both Belgium and the Netherlands as well as winning the 2015 African Cup of Nations and would be a valuable member of the Sporting Gijon squad. The Ivorian will forever be remembered at Tyneside for his thunderbolt in the Arsenal comeback.
