Brentford midfielder extends contract

Brentford’s Lewis Macleod has committed his future to the club until 2019 as announced on the club website.

The 22-year-old’s previous contract was set to expire in the summer of 2018 but his new deal keeps him at Griffin Park until summer 2019. Macleod was signed in 2014 from Scottish giants Rangers but arriving with a hamstring problem and further injuries for the Scotsman meant he did not make his Bees debut until early 2016.

This season, Macleod was a vital part of Dean Smith’s team as played in 13 of the Championship outfit’s first 15 games of the term until sustaining a serious knee injury in October’s win at Loftus Road. The former Scotland U21 international had also contributed with five assists.

Brentford head coach Dean Smith was delighted at the new contract, saying: “I am really pleased that Lewis has extended his contract with us. He has had a really unfortunate time with injuries since he has joined Brentford and prior to his injury against QPR he was beginning to show the undoubted potential he possesses.

“He has been missed by us since getting injured but we are pleased with his recovery to date. It is refreshing for me to see our Club looking after its players after unfortunate injuries and having faith in their recovery.”

The attacking midfielder made his Rangers debut aged just 18 and in the past been included in a Scotland full international squad against England and Republic of Ireland but failed to play in both games. His injury problem is expected to keep him sidelined for nine months, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
