In last night’s FA Cup third round draw, Rafa Benitez’s high flying Magpies were dealt an away fixture to Gary Rowett’s Birmingham City side.
Rowett’s Blues sit four places below United in the Sky Bet Championship table, and are nine points behind the Geordies – who are setting the pace in the second division.
It promises to be a good encounter between two high-flying second tier outfits, and in this article I’ll be taking a look at how Newcastle fans reacted on Twitter to the announcement of the tie.
TWITTER REACTS: Newcastle United
1 – Magpies fan Graham is perhaps disappointed that United didn’t draw a top flight outfit…

2 – Ger perhaps feels like a cup run would be nice – but promotion back to the top flight must be Rafa’s number one priority…
Birmingham away, winnable and losable in equal measures, don't really care either way, need to focus on winning league from now on #nufc

7 – Natasha is a member of a large persuasion who perhaps aren’t a fan of same division cup ties…
Another cup draw with a team in the same division. Sigh 😪 #FACup #nufc

8 – I’m sure many a Magpie still has bad memories of that Tyneside drubbing, nearly ten years ago…
Birmingham, then. At least we get a good look at them this weekend. That 5-1 battering at home in 2007 still smarts, though. #nufc #FACup

9 – To finish it off, a tweet from Alex. It’s always nice to finish on a positive, eh?

So – Newcastle fans, what do you make of the draw?
Will Rafa produce a tactical masterclass at St Andrews, that will banish all memories of that game over nine years ago? Or, will it be another FA Cup triumph over United for the Blues?
