Ex-Premier League footballer is favourite for Bury

Phil Neville is the surprise candidate as Sky Bet name him as one of the favourites to take charge of Bury following David Flitcroft’s dismissal.

Neville made over 700 professional appearances in his playing career for Manchester United, Everton and England. The 39-year-old has never been head coach but has high-quality experience in coaching positions. Neville has been part of the England U21’s coaching staff as well as being a first-team coach at Manchester United. He was also the assistant manager of Valencia where his brother Gary was head coach, but Gary Neville’s debut in management didn’t go to plan as he was sacked after just four months.

Phil Neville, who holds a UEFA B license, has always expressed his desire to enter the coaching side of football. He was interviewed for the Everton job in 2013 but the role went to the more experienced boss Roberto Martinez.

Chris Brass, the current head of football operations at Bury, is the favourite to land the job. Recently sacked Wigan boss Gary Caldwell is second favourite and Neville is behind the pair at 6/1.

Neville would be at home at Gigg Lane. Phil was born in Bury and went to school in the Greater Manchester town. His father, the late Neville Neville, was a director at the Shakers and played a vital role in securing the club’s safety after going into administration.

Bury are currently on an 11 game winless run in the league and sit in 16th place. They face a visit to Wimbledon on Saturday. Perhaps local lad Neville may win his chance at management at Gigg Lane, and he will hope he doesn’t emulate his brother’s fortunes at Valencia.
