Joyce targets Man Utd legend to boost Wigan coaching staff

Wigan Athletic manager Warren Joyce is keen on adding Manchester United great Paul Scholes to his coaching staff at the DW Stadium according to The Sun. However The Mirror understands that Scholes is linked with a move back to Old Trafford to take on the Under-23 managerial role, the job Joyce left to link up with the Latics.

The 41-year-old has mainly been working as a TV pundit in the years since he retired from the game in 2013. He hasn’t done any of his coaching badges, which would make it hard for him to take on the role as Under-23 boss at the Red Devils, despite his obvious lofty status with the club.

Joyce isn’t looking for Scholes to commit to a full-time role, but something more low-key could be beneficial to all concerned. The newly-appointed Latics manager wants to provide a lift to a squad which appears void of confidence, highlighted by the home defeat to Reading in his first game in charge. He is also looking to add the likes of Paul McGuinness and Jimmy Ryan to his staff as well, whom he worked with at Man Utd as well.

Following that Reading loss, Joyce instructed some of his players to play through the international break, rather than giving them a rest, in order to improve upon their recent showings. As Joyce looks to stamp his own authority at the DW Stadium, could he soon be calling upon former England international Scholes to bring about some much-needed improvement? Time will tell.
