Birmingham City: Rowett wants midfielder to have more influence

Gary Rowett has told the Birmingham Mail that he wants midfielder, Stephen Gleeson to have a more influential role in the middle of the park.

Gleeson, who made his 100th appearance for The Blues in the draw against Huddersfield last weekend, has virtually been an ever-present in the side since he arrived from MK Dons in the summer of 2014.

He featured in more than 150 games for The Dons, before leaving on a Bosman free transfer.

His recent performances, which has seen him start 12 of his sides first 16 matches, has seen him earn a recall to Martin O’Neill’s Republic Of Ireland side.

Rowett, said of the player, that although he feels it is Gleeson that settles his side down when the pressure rises, he still expects the midfielder to do even more. (From The Birmingham Mail)

I think he has been very, very consistent for us. He is like most of the players where you think ‘Can we do that better?’

“I am sure like all of them we are always trying to improve the players.

“With him (Gleeson) sometimes it’s him believing in his ability even more. I think there’s games he could dictate the play even more than he does.

“He has played that role of sitting midfield and he has extended that role in being able to get forward at the right times -as he showed last season, he scored against Derby, Milton Keynes and one or two other goals.

“You look at the second half against Villa, when we get on the ball it’s Glees that usually settles us down.
