TV pundit defines midfielder as ‘the Mesut Ozil of the Championship’

In his Daily Mail column, Sky Sports TV football pundit Jamie Redknapp has heaped glowing praise upon Derby County midfielder Will Hughes. Redknapp describes the young playmaker as the ‘Mesut Ozil of the Championship’ after his impressive showing in the televised victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

43-year-old Redknapp, who won 17 caps for the England national team, said that Hughes was someone who ‘caught his eye’ this weekend. Hughes has played over 130 times for the Rams and only turned 21 earlier this year. He has several caps for the England Under-21 side, with many tipping him to be a senior international at some point in the future.

The creative midfielder missed the majority of last season with a serious injury, but returned in time to be involved in their failed play-off campaign. He has earned a regular starting place this season, firstly under Nigel Pearson and current boss Steve McClaren, who has already been a big fan of the Weybridge-born player.

Redknapp, son of football manager veteran Harry, praised Hughes’s ‘range of passing’, insisting that ‘Premier League scouts must be watching him every week’. He now feels that in order to make that step up into the Premier League and the senior international scene, he must ‘show he has the physicality’ to compete.
