Newcastle: Forward wins player of the month award

Newcastle United forward, Dwight Gayle, has capped off a brilliant October by being named the Championship Player of the Month.

Gayle, who joined the Tyneside club in the summer, scored four goals and his sparkling form was a massive reason why his new club won every game in the month.  Ensuring they entered November three points clear at the top of the division.

He won the award convincingly too – winning 9,042 out of 12,000 votes cast in the poll.

Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Hooper came second,  he won 846 votes and finished just ahead of Brighton’s Sam Baldock, who won 751.

The other players in the top six were:

Cardiff’s Peter Whittingham (669), QPR midfielder Massimo Luongo (399) and Preston’s Paul Gallagher (285).

Despite his brilliant recent form, he is a doubt to face Cardiff City at the weekend. His manager, Rafael Benitez, has opted to use caution over his top scorer, who has been suffering from hamstring problems.

Benitez, however, in an interview with the Chronicle Live, did insist that he expected the eleven goal forward to be fit.

“He was training but we have to be cautious with him. We will see in two or three days,” Benitez said.

“We have some time and we will see how he feels. At the moment he is training and improving little by little.”

Gayle, who rose up the football league as a quick as a flash, failed to really hold down a place at his last club, Crystal Palace, who at the time forked out a club record £4.5 million fee.

He has, however, finally found a place to settle in the North East and his fitness could prove to be key if Newcastle are to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
