5 names revealed in the running to become next Wolves manager

The Express & Star reports that Wolverhampton Wanderers have whittled down their search for a new manager down to five candidates. All of the names in question are British, and former England manager and boyhood Wolves fan Sam Allardyce is not in the running.

The five names under consideration are interim head coach Rob Edwards, former Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood, one-time Wolves midfielder Paul Ince, ex-Blackburn Rovers boss Paul Lambert and Nigel Pearson, who was sacked by Derby County earlier this season.

There is the chance that other names could appear and be added to this list, but it is understood the next manager will come from these five names.

Pearson, who has also managed Leicester City when they won the Championship title, has already had a second interview by the Molineux club. Kevin Thelwell, the Wolves Sporting Director, is heading the search for Walter Zenga’s replacement, but Jeff Shi of owners Fosun International has sat in on all interviews so far.

Ince, who hasn’t hid from the fact he wants the job, will be interviewed later this week, whilst Edwards of course remains in caretaker charge for the foreseeable future. Sherwood has been out of work since leaving Aston Villa during their relegation from the Premier League last season, whilst Lambert departed Blackburn at the end of last season. The Scot also has experience of winning promotion out of the English second tier, just like Pearson.

Pearson remains the bookmakers favourite for the role, although Lambert is not far behind. Sherwood is then the next price, and then there is a sizeable gap to the rest.
