Highly-rated Championship keeper out until December

The Sheffield Star reports that Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith is unlikely to return from injury until December at the earliest. The youngster recently underwent surgery on a finger problem sustained during a training session in September.

The 20-year-old, who was called-up into the England Under-21 squad last year, is highly-rated by everyone at Hillsborough, who see him as a future number one at the club. He is currently second choice behind Republic of Ireland international Keiren Westwood, who continues to suffer from his own injury problems. Cameron Dawson started the weekend home win over Queens Park Rangers and is likely to again start against Derby County on Saturday.

Head coach Carlos Carvalhal recently confirmed that Wildsmith had surgery on his injury and wouldn’t return for some time,

“Joe had surgery on his finger and will be out some weeks. He did it in training and these things take time to recover from.

“We don’t like to put a timescale on it and put pressure on the player and the medical department.”

Carvalhal confirmed Westwood is ‘still feeling pain’ in a back problem, meaning Dawson is again expected to start, once more ahead of summer signing Jake Kean.

Wildsmith started the EFL Cup defeat at Cambridge United earlier this season, his only appearance of the season so far. He made his Owls debut in August 2015, also in a cup tie, against Mansfield Town. His league debut came a few days later away to Ipswich Town.
